Decoding CCUS project success

525 pre-construction projects and who is likely to advance beyond the drawing board

byEnverus

CALGARY, Alberta (Sept. 25, 2024) — Enverus Intelligence Research (EIR), a subsidiary of Enverus, the most trusted energy-dedicated SaaS company that leverages generative AI across its solutions, is releasing a report on carbon capture, utilization and storage (CCUS) risk assessment. The report harnesses the power of multiple Enverus datasets to grade more than 525 pre-construction CCUS projects in the U.S. Enverus’ proprietary Project Viability Index (PVI) was used to score the company’s view of the relative potential to achieve a final investment decision (FID).

“With all the hype around CCUS technology, industry is facing growing pressure to discern which projects will move beyond the drawing board,” said Heather Leahey, principal analyst at EIR.

“We’ve leveraged our extensive collection of datasets to grade more than 525 pre-construction projects based on asset quality, innovation ecosystem, supportive partners and existing progress toward FID. The over 50-point range in PVI scores across tracked U.S. projects reflects geographical and technological diversity and various project maturities.”

Key takeaways from the report:

  • EIR highlights the top 20 companies in the U.S. which hold the highest-ranked inventory of pre-construction projects, as well as the five highest scoring projects across each of the capture, transportation, storage, and utilization segments.
  • According to EIR’s calculations, North Dakota, Colorado, and Louisiana score the highest. These states benefit from strong resource quality, supportive investment environments and/or progress toward FID to-date.
  • Comprehensive and systematic project risking is needed to enable efficient capital allocation and strategic decision-making while enhancing investor and developer reputations and environmental impacts.
