PUDs are included in a company’s balance sheet as part of its asset base, influencing investor perception, creditworthiness and stock valuation. Their inclusion can significantly enhance a company’s financial profile, especially when development plans are credible and aligned with regulatory standards.
Valuation of PUDs involves estimating the future cash flows from the expected production, discounted to present value. This process considers factors like commodity prices, development costs, production timelines and regulatory risks, making it both technical and market-sensitive.
PUDs carry development risk, including delays in drilling, cost overruns, regulatory hurdles and market volatility. If development does not proceed as planned, companies may be forced to write down these assets, negatively impacting financial statements and investor confidence.
In 2008, the SEC updated its rules to allow more flexibility in reporting PUDs, including the use of predictive models and extending the distance from producing wells for reserve estimates. This change made it easier for companies to list PUDs as assets, boosting valuations but also raising concerns about speculative reporting.
