NGLs are separated from natural gas through a process called cryogenic processing, which cools the gas to very low temperatures to condense the liquids. These liquids are then sent to fractionation facilities where they are separated into individual components.
Midstream companies are responsible for gathering, transporting, storing and fractionating NGLs. They operate pipelines and processing plants that move NGLs from production sites to end users or export terminals, ensuring safe and efficient delivery.
NGLs are highly valuable due to their diverse uses. Ethane is a key feedstock for plastics, propane is used for heating and cooking, and butanes and natural gasoline are used in fuel blending. Their market value can significantly impact the profitability of natural gas production.
NGLs are typically transported via dedicated NGL pipelines, railcars or trucks. Because they are liquids under pressure, they require specialized infrastructure to ensure safe handling and delivery to fractionation plants or end markets.
