Revolutionizing ERCOT Power Grid Forecasting with Enverus New Model

byJacob Papka

The Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) manages one of the most dynamic and complex power grids in the United States, serving over 26 million customers across Texas. Forecasting energy demand and supply in this region is no small feat. From extreme weather events like Winter Storm Uri to the rapid growth of renewable energy sources, ERCOT’s grid faces unique challenges that make accurate forecasting critical, yet difficult. In this blog, we introduce the new ERCOT Power and Renewables Forecast Model with Enverus proprietary inputs, a game-changer designed to tackle these challenges and deliver superior accuracy for energy market participants.

The Challenges of Forecasting for ERCOT

ERCOT’s power grid operates in a deregulated market with a diverse energy mix, including significant contributions from wind, solar, and traditional sources like natural gas and nuclear. This diversity, while a strength, introduces several forecasting challenges:

  • Weather Volatility: Texas’ unpredictable weather, from scorching summers to rare but devastating winter storms, creates sudden spikes in energy demand and disrupts renewable generation patterns.
  • Renewable Integration: The rapid rise of wind and solar energy requires precise forecasting of intermittent generation, which is often difficult due to variability in weather and grid constraints.
  • Grid Operations Complexity: Elements like phase shifters, which help manage power flow, add layers of complexity that standard models struggle to simulate accurately.
  • Data Limitations: Publicly available data, such as ERCOT’s own load and renewable forecasts, may not always capture real-time dynamics or account for emerging trends in energy consumption.

These challenges underscore the need for a forecasting model that can adapt to ERCOT’s unique environment while providing reliable, actionable insights for traders, utilities and analysts.

Introducing the Enhanced ERCOT P&R Forecast Model

We’re thrilled to announce the release of the new ERCOT P&R Forecast Model, now available to Short-Term P&R Forecast subscribers. This enhanced model integrates Enverus proprietary load and renewable forecasts to deliver unparalleled accuracy and deeper insights into ERCOT’s power grid dynamics. Alongside the original ERCOT model, which uses ERCOT’s public forecasts, subscribers can now access both models to compare and select the best fit for their needs.

Key Enhancements in the ERCOT Forecast

The model brings several cutting-edge improvements to the table:

  • Proprietary Load and Renewable Forecasts: Leveraging Enverus in-house forecasting expertise, the model uses proprietary data for load and renewable generation and nodal renewable forecasts. These forecasts have consistently outperformed ERCOT’s public data, offering a more reliable foundation for decision-making.
  • Improved Phase Shifter Modeling: The new model more accurately simulates phase shifter operations, better reflecting real-world grid behavior and enhancing the precision of power flow predictions.
  • Updated Nuclear Generation Data: By incorporating a new data source from the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC), the model provides more accurate nuclear generation forecasts, a critical component of ERCOT’s energy mix.

These enhancements make the model a powerful tool for navigating the complexities of Texas’ energy market.

Why This Matters

Accuracy is everything in energy forecasting. Whether you’re a trader optimizing bids, a utility planning capacity, or an analyst studying market trends, reliable forecasts can make or break your strategy. The model’s proprietary inputs have demonstrated superior performance compared to public forecasts, giving you confidence in your analysis. With access to both the original model and the new model, you can compare outputs, validate assumptions, and choose the approach that aligns with your goals.

Showcasing Performance: Visualizing the Difference

To illustrate the power of the new model, the below forecasts demonstrate how the model’s proprietary forecasts and enhanced modeling translate into real-world accuracy.

Improved Constraint Forecasting

BIGLAKE 69KV – PHBL_TAP 69KV (BIGLAK_PHBL_T1_1) FLO SESMFRI8

In the case of the Biglake 69kV line, the new model forecasted a closer correlation to the benchmark flow compared to the original model. Notably, on February 23, the new model accurately predicted flow near the line’s maximum rating, showcasing its ability to capture critical grid conditions.

FORTMA 138KV – YELWJCKT 138KV (FORTMA_YELWJC1_1) FLO DBIGKEN5

For the Fortma 138kV line, the new model achieved a tighter correlation to the benchmark flow. On March 10, both models forecasted flow at the line’s maximum rating, but the new model’s predictions were closer to the benchmark, demonstrating improved precision.

Improved Generation Forecasting

COMANCHE PEAK (1, 2)

With updated nuclear generation data from the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, the ERCOT (ENV) model forecasted when a generator at the Comanche Peak nuclear plant came online, aligning closely with real-time conditions. This improvement enhances the model’s ability to predict critical shifts in nuclear generation.

PROSPERO SOLAR (PROSP)

By incorporating nodal renewable forecasts, the new model forecasted generation at the Prospero Solar facility with greater accuracy than the original model, better capturing the variability of solar output.

These examples underscore the tangible benefits of the new model, from tighter alignment with actual grid conditions to more precise predictions of key market variables.
