A RE-Cap of RE+ | Batteries Take Center Stage

Battery energy storage systems (BESS) dominated discussions at the recent RE+ conference, the largest clean energy event in North America. As long-term load continues to grow and grid dynamics shift, industry leaders and Enverus Intelligence® Research (EIR) agree that BESS can provide much needed load management and energy cost savings. Storage is now at the core of clean energy project strategy, with panels, talks and showcases highlighting advancements in storage design, driving investment across the industry.

Energy storage producers are acutely aware of this need for innovative storage solutions. Tesla recently announced the Megablock, a 20MWh battery system that expands the existing Megapack system with MWh/acre increases estimated at 20%. This large-scale system is meant for grid stabilization and blackout mitigation as U.S. grids continue to experience unprecedented load growth.

Figure 1 shows an EV charging station’s energy cost profile in three different scenarios. Operators can choose either a behind-the-meter (BTM) or combining BTM and front-of-the-meter in a hybrid model. This allows the battery to provide both energy and ancillary services, diversifying revenues and saving costs. EIR research shows the hybrid model yields an annual cost reduction of 44%.

Research Highlights:

  • CCUS Offtake – From Signature to Storage – This report analyzes 228 mtpa of carbon offtake agreements across 164 deals, highlighting sector adoption trends, leading suppliers and offtakers, and the remaining 2.2 Gt opportunity. It examines the roles of OXY and XOM, ethanol’s rapid uptake, constraints in Class VI well capacity and the significant untapped potential in power generation.

  • Chasing Connection – Interconnection Timelines and Economics Post-OBBBA – This white paper for POWER Magazine outlines the state of the interconnection queue, project timelines, delays and project economics following the passing of the One Big Beautiful Bill Act. We examine the impacts on project economics and feasibility as tax credit timelines grow closer and projects rush to connect.

Finland is home to the world’s largest pumped thermal battery – a 1MW sand-based system that has cut heating emissions in processing Pornainen nearly 70%. These batteries store energy by heating and cooling materials like sand, gravel or molten salt, then convert the temperature difference back into electricity.
