DJ horseshoe wells epitomize efficiency in tight spaces

EIR identifies better breakeven prices in southern Weld County

byEnverus

CALGARY, Alberta (Feb. 5, 2024) — Enverus Intelligence Research (EIR), a subsidiary of Enverus, the most trusted energy-dedicated SaaS platform, has released a report forced on DJ Basin operators in Colorado who continue to employ creative drilling techniques to access regulatory-risked inventory.

“Colorado’s strict regulatory rules are prompting energy firms like Occidental Petroleum to get creative in drilling wells, especially in areas originally developed years ago,” said Ryan Hill, report author and a vice president at EIR.

“Occidental and others are employing horseshoe wells and extended-reach laterals to access oil and gas reserves at comparable economics to conventional approaches. Enverus Intelligence Research expects these creative designs will play a meaningful role in accessing small but high-quality acreage positions.”

Key takeaways from the report:

  • Energy firms can generate better breakevens using horseshoe wells instead of drilling two wells with horizontal sections that stretch 1 mile apiece.
  • Horseshoe well opportunities generally represent only small portions of remaining inventory for the most active operators in the DJ Basin.
  • Colorado operators continue to employ creative techniques such as horseshoe wells to access reservoir while limiting surface disturbance because of tighter regulations.
