The Enverus Innovation Underground Series, hosted by Enverus Intelligence® Research Analyst Graham Bain, features in-depth discussions with industry leaders pioneering the adoption of cleaner energy solutions, including CCUS, hydrogen, geothermal, direct lithium extraction and more.

Geothermal drilling costs consume roughly half of total project development spend and that share grows as the industry pushes deeper. Moving from conventional 3-kilometer wells into the 10-to-15-kilometer superhot rock frontier introduces a new set of engineering challenges: extreme downhole pressures, rapid tool degradation, longer trip times and wellbore instability in formations that behave nothing like a typical shale play.

The companies solving those problems will determine whether geothermal scales from niche to grid-relevant. NOV, with 160 years of drilling technology behind it, is applying oil and gas expertise directly to this challenge, developing high-temperature coatings, next-generation PDC bits, AI-driven drilling analytics and specialized downhole motors purpose-built for geothermal conditions.

In this episode, Graham Bain is joined by Alexis Garcia, Director of NOV Geothermal at NOV. Alexis brings 30 years of experience in drilling and downhole technologies, with deep expertise in drill bit technology and downhole product development through NOV’s ReedHycalog division. He has spent nearly three years leading NOV’s effort to commercialize its drilling portfolio for the geothermal sector and co-authored key industry publications on applying O&G downhole expertise to geothermal.

Together, they explore how proven oil and gas drilling technologies are being adapted for geothermal, what it takes to drill reliably at extreme depths and temperatures, and why repeatability is the key to unlocking the sector’s projected 50-fold growth through 2050.

Topics included:

  • How NOV is adapting its oil and gas drilling portfolio for geothermal applications
  • The engineering challenges of drilling past 5 km toward 10–15 km depth in hard, hot rock
  • NOV’s TK-340TC insulating coatings, Phoenix PDC bits with ION+ cutters rated to 1,200°C and AI-driven drilling analytics
  • The Drakon coating co-developed with Eavor for reservoirs above 300°C
  • Results from the FORGE well in Utah: 63% reduction in on-bottom drilling time in granite
  • Why repeatability and standardization are critical to scaling geothermal economically
  • Completions and wellbore integrity are the next frontier once drilling challenges are solved
  • The O&G-to-geothermal talent and technology bridge
