Best in Class for OFS: Drillinginfo Notches Another First with Voice-Activated App Commands

Austin, TX (Mar. 6, 2018) – Drillinginfo, the leading energy SaaS and data analytics company, announced another “first” today – the ability to use voice-activated commands for its oilfield services (OFS) mobile platform.

Approximately one year ago, Drillinginfo released its mobile application (app) on iTunes and Google Play and changed the way the oil and industry could access critical information on the go. Since then, Drillinginfo has seen more than 2,500 users adopt the mobile platform.

“While voice activation has been integrated into our daily lives outside of work for a while, it’s a first in the oil and gas technology industry,” said Colin Westmoreland, General Manager of Oilfield Services at Drillinginfo. “Aside from the safety aspect of hands-free capabilities, our voice-activated application commands put our suite of OFS tools into a category of its own,” said Westmoreland.

The first version of the voice-activated app is focused on the drilling rig dataset and allows users to search by operator, contractor, state, county, horsepower or region.

Luke Crownover, CEO of Robinson Drilling and early adopter of the Drillinginfo app, praised its capabilities and ease of use. “This app has been a game changer for us,” remarked Crownover. “Just a year ago we were sorting through daily reports and spreadsheets to try and keep track of what was going on. Now with a simple voice command, my team can identify where a rig is, who’s drilling it, what type of well it is, and who they’re working for. And with Drillinginfo leveraging the GPS coordinates of the rigs, it ensures accurate rig locations and directions for team members. Efficiency is key to operating in this price environment,” he said.

This first-of-its-kind announcement isn’t the only “first” Drillinginfo lays claim to. The company is considered an analytics and data pioneer for developing the industry’s first Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) platform for the oil and gas industry, as well as the first to digitize oilfield records and lease polygons, automate drilling activity monitoring via its VirtualScout™ tool, place GPS trackers on drilling rigs, and most recently, step into the world of artificial intelligence to forecast power load needs and real-time curve-building capabilities.

Much of Drillinginfo’s innovative decisions come from two sources: first, by listening closely to feedback, namely through a series of customer-focused conversations to survey what needs are not being met by energy analytics firms, and second, by anticipating what’s to come in technology in general, and identifying opportunities to create intuitive, easy- and fun-to-use solutions before the customer even requests them.

With this latest announcement, coupled by its many other “firsts” in energy, Drillinginfo is also acting on a large scale trend many other industries already see coming: the next generation workforce.

According to a recent Accenture Strategy analysis, older workers appear to have recovered from the financial crash of 2008 and no longer need to postpone their retirements, and the group notes that just two years ago, baby boomers accounted for 19 percent of the oil and gas workforce. That figure is expected to plunge to just 7 percent in 2025 and could mean a shortage of at least 10,000 petro-technical professionals – possibly as much as 40,000 – in eight years. Furthermore, the oil and gas industry’s most recent downturn resulted in many wellknown, large-scale layoffs. For Drillinginfo, all signs are point to a changing of the guard for employees of oil and gas.
